The first sports day in the history of Magbenteh

Already for some months it was the intention to hold a social function for the whole staff of the hospital and TFC. Some weeks ago one of the nursing staff members came with the suggestion to hold a sports day. The idea was taken up and the date was set for Friday 29 May. Bernhard Krisifoe, the overall chief umpire to be, and several staff members started to organize this event. Two teams were formed, The Medicals and The Technicals, and in the days preceding the event in the afternoons the whole Hospital seemed to be in turmoil since many team members from both sides were training for the big event. Football, volley ball and athletics.

On Friday afternoon the sports day started with a Volley Ball game as a warming up, also for the referee (the vicar) since quite a few of his rulings became the subject of heated debate, something that was to happen in most of the games, and the game remained undecided. The next item was a Tug of War and as somebody remarked “the looser will be the Rope”, in the first heat that was exactly what happened. Next on the programme was athletics, ladies and men short distance running, relay running and a three legged race. Of course a football match could not be left out of the programme; however the game remains undecided because it was suspended after an initially serious looking injury of one of the players. Just as a warming up to the meal David and his team had prepared for the whole staff the sporting events were concluded by Musical Chairs and Musical Statues.

This first sports day in the history of Magbenteh did not give a clear victory to one of the teams, however the debate over the results no doubt will continue over the next weeks. This day will not be forgotten easily and most likely will get a follow on next year.
