A reality that saves lives

The Magbenteh Hospital has been built with the help of foreign donors and has been officially inaugurated by the President at the beginning of 2006. This new hospital, including the new TFC has about 200 beds and is primarily meant for medical care for women and children. Presently there are 3 expatriate doctors in tropical medicine working in the Magbenteh Hospital and 2 local Medical Assistants and a total of about 100 staff members.

  • 40-60 operations per month
  • 500-750 operations per year
  • 450 patients visit the clinic each month, 12% are children under the age of 5
  • 83 patients are hospitalised each month

During 2008, the hospitals received one medical team consisting of a surgeon, anaesthetist, an anaesthesia expert and a theatre nurse with the aim:

  • To support the tropical doctors
  • Execute specific surgeries
  • Transfer of knowledge to local medical staff

Later one surgeon came alone to realize the same aim with the team of expat and local doctors.

Maternity Ward
Maternity department:
After an extensive study was executed, we started the maternity department in April 2008. Towards September of 2008, more and more “normal” deliveries could be executed.

Physiotherapy department:
In 2008, we continued with the newly opened physiotherapy department. We have treated inpatients as well as ambulatory patients and also continued with the training of one of the local staff in the Magbenteh Hospital. The majority of cases (38%) were related to Orthopedics / Traumatology followed by Neurology (30%) and Pediatrics (26%).

Solar project:
In September, two engineers arrived from Germany to install the setup for the solar energy panels and for the internal communication system. After the container from Germany arrived with all the donated goods, the two engineers, Eric and Fred, started work. They managed to install the cable infrastructure. To fix the solar panels on the roofs, we did not have the correct materials. Also, the gel batteries had not yet arrived. Never the less, we also started to build the battery house so that it would be ready. The two engineers can and will come back in 2009 to finish the job.

Waterhole

Water project:
In November 2008, we started the water project by drilling a 45 meter deep borehole. During the dry season, we noticed that the well was not deep enough.

In March 2009, we drilled down to a depth of 87 meters. Following this, we are building a 35 m3 tank to finally solve the water problem in the hospital.
