The "Outreach" program

The goal of this program is to reduce infant mortality in Sierra Leone by reaching out to the villages and finding the under nourished children and then bringing them, if necessary, to our Therapeutic Feeding Center.

First, we contacted the nurses of the Primary Health Units (PHU) and we informed them about the ways of identifying malnutrition and about the admissions criteria for the TFC. These centers are very decrepit, there are not very many of them and each one manages several villages.

It is very important to work closely with these nurses, this will allow us to react very quickly in cases of malnutrition in children in these villages.

Each week, a team of 3 nurses from the TFC go to the regional PHU. On their arrival, mothers are already waiting for them with their children. Most of them have travelled a long way on foot to come to the PHU to meet these nurses.

After a session of prayers and songs, the nurses start their sessions by explaining the following:

  • how to detect and prevent malnutrition in children
  • the importance of proper nourishment of babies and toddlers
  • how to prepare healthy food
  • the existance of a therapeutic feeding center for children (TFC)

During this informational session, our team observes the group and looks out for children suffering from malnutrition. Our nurses them bring them to the TFC accompanied by a family member.

The inhabitants of these villages are very poor and do not have money to pay for the transport to the TFC.

We explain to them that the admission of their child to the TFC is free as well as the time the family member stays there and the transport to and from the TFC of both the child and the family member..

The care provided there saves the lives of many children!
